Open calling for Ryan Fenwick’s Golf Academy

Since setting up his golf academy at West Hove a few years ago, PGA Professional, Ryan Fenwick, and his coaching concept are going from strength to strength, with a handful of high achievers and a growing membership, writes Charles Dehaan.

His stable now includes not just the English Men’s Amateur Champion, Tom Thurloway, but also current Sussex Men’s Amateur Champion, George Goddard, along with Justin Walters and Marco Penge, who have turned to Fenwick for mentoring.

Besides these top performers, the Ryan Fenwick Golf Academy now boasts well over 150 members, attracted not only by his preference for face to face coaching, but also his performance studio at West Hove, and the growing community of like-minded golfers that work with Fenwick on their game, swing and attitude.

Fenwick’s travel schedule – the Scottish Open, The Open at Royal Portrush – means his diary is packed, but he’s got two young PGA Assistant Professionals backing him up, who he’s happy to rely on when it comes to Fenwick’s high standards of coaching: Peter Tarver-Jones, a regular winner on the PGA South Region circuit, and George Pyett, who’s taking the Ryan Fenwick Golf Academy into the local schools and getting more kids into golf.

Fenwick explains his approach: “My idea was to build a stable, a bit like a boxing gym, where the players could all feed off each other as well as get coaching from myself.  Now that we’re getting the numbers and the successes, it’s clearly working the way we intended.”

He also likes to remind his young stars how things used to be: “The clubs they use now are so forgiving that it’s very hard for them to feel a bad shot.  So I put an old MacGregor 2-iron and a persimmon headed, steel shafted driver into their hands to let them find out what it used to feel like.  Once they can master an old fashioned 2-iron with very different launch and feel characteristics, they acquire a new level of appreciation for the tools they’re using every day!”
